In this workshop, dancer Dauda Conteh and yoga teacher Marie-Theres Langlotz will lead you through a 2,5h grounding experience, melting rhythmical Western African Dance with the flow of yoga.
Western African Dance
Western African dance is more than an art of self-expression, it’s a healing experience; a means of connection with flow and free expression. The mindful movement to the rhythm of drums takes you to an elevated state of consciousness and the freedom of the body reconnects you with your own rhythm.
The practice of yoga combines movement with breath, meditation, mantras and mudras. It aids in restoring a feeling of strength, safety and comfort in one’s body which makes it possible to be in the present. As yoga allows the body to regain its natural movement and teaches the use of breath for self-regulation, it helps balance emotional and physiological states.
Dauda Conteh is originally from Sierra Leone, Western Africa. He has been part of the National Dance Troupe of Sierra Leone from a young age, participating at festivals in Africa (Gambia, Senegal, Ghana), in Europe (Italy, Poland, Spain) and in Turkey.
He is a dancer (African Dance, Contemporary Dance, Acrobatics) and percussionist (djembe, doundoun). Dauda has been living in Greece for several years and works as an African dance teacher and percussion teacher, teaching both adults and children. He has participated in “Sacred Drums of the Earth” in the Dora Stratou Theater between 2012 and 2013 (dance, acrobatics) and in the performance of “The Quiet Voice” by Ermira Goro as a dancer (contemporary) and as a percussionist (music diligence – Nikos Kipourgos) and in many other appearances in Greece (Θέατρο Σημείο, Bollywood Festival 2014, Byron College Cultural Festival, Fringe Festival and more). He is a member of the music and dance group Troupe Emma Ya and one of the founding members of Watoto Africa.
Marie-Theres Langlotz was born and raised in Germany, studied, worked and lived in Germany, France, Greece, Canada and Indonesia and traveled to more than 30 countries. After graduating in International Business and facing her health challenges, she decided to move into the direction of holistic healing and studied Holistic Nutrition in Vancouver, Canada at IHN Vancouver.
Marie is a Holistic Nutritionist, a Reiki Practitioner, a Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Practitioner and Yoga teacher (200h RYT). While volunteering for “the Schoolbox Project” in a refugee camp (Elliniko, Athens, Greece), she has also been trained in trauma-informed care; an approach which she incorporates in all of her work. For the past 1,5 years, she’s been working internationally as a Holistic Nutritionist with a focus on stress management and trauma healing, both on- and offline.
Her gentle Hatha yoga classes are a fusion of her various healing techniques, guided by the principles of trauma-informed care and a compassionate curiosity. Connecting mindful movement with breathing, deep guided meditations and relaxation, her yoga practices are a safe, nourishing space, offering stress relief, and a return to one’s Self.
Marie’s grounding yoga classes are accompanied with live music by Dauda, who sings and plays the traditional Western African Kamale Ngoni. Together, they take their students on a journey beyond the mat, making the yoga class a unique healing experience.
The workshop “Rhythm & Flow” is the result of sharing their passions and introduces participants to the healing benefits of Western African Dance (Rhythm) and Yoga (Flow).
